WVU Required Training

  • CITI Program ethics training is required for all personnel and all research projects. Scroll down for more information.

  • NIH Good Clinical Practice training is required for NIH funded research projects. Scroll down for more information.

  • CITI Program Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training is required for federally funded research projects and most sponsored research projects. Scroll down for more information.

  • Citi Program Ethics Training - Affiliated Researchers

    Register for an account at   CITI Program. During the registration process, you will be prompted to select the ethics training courses that you plan to complete. A ll researchers who will be listed on the protocol submission are required to complete the training.

    Complete either the   Biomedical Research Investigators (if you are in a medical field) or the   Social and Behavioral Research Investigators course. These courses can be found under the Human Research section of the course registration screen.  Once you have completed the required courses with a score of 80% or better, you can proceed to the next step. Please note that you do not need to send ethics training documentation to the WVU OHRP. 

    One of the following courses is required for AFFILIATED researchers listed on a protocol submission:

    • Biomedical Research Investigators - Basic Course or Refresher Course -The Refresher Course can be taken if you have previously completed the Basic Course).
    • Social & Behavioral Research Investigators - Basic Course or Refresher Course -The Refresher Course can be taken if you have previously completed the Basic Course.
    • IRB Member Course - Anyone can take this course; however, it is more intensive than the other two courses and is only required for IRB members,

    Citi Program Ethics Training - Non-Affiliated Researchers

    One of the following courses is required for NON-AFFILIATED researchers listed on a protocol submission:

    • Abbreviated Biomedical Research Investigators
    • Abbreviated Social & Behavioral Research Investigators
    • Biomedical Research Investigators, Basic Course or Refresher Course - The Refresher Course can be taken if you have previously completed the Basic Course.
    • Social & Behavioral Research Investigators, Basic Course or Refresher Course -  The Refresher Course can be taken if you have previously completed the Basic Course.
    • IRB Member Course - Anyone can take this course; however, it is more intensive than the other courses and is only required for IRB members.

    NIH Good Clinical Practice Training

    The National Institute of Health (NIH) has established a new directive regarding the training of investigators and staff involved in the conduct, oversight, or management of any NIH funded clinical trial. Anyone that is involved with NIH funded research, regardless of the nature of the research (biomedical or social science related) must be trained in Good Clinical Practice (GCP).

    West Virginia University provides GCP courses through the CITI Program. Courses offered can be found under the Question 7 section of the ‘Add a Course’ area of your CITI account. Individuals needing to complete this training can take the course titled  GCP (Good Clinical Practice) (Human Subject Research) More information concerning this requirement can be found at  NIH's notice page 

    Citi Program Responsible Conduct of Research Courses

    Courses offered by WVU for Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) courses do not meet requirements for researchers listed on a protocol submission. RCR courses are only required for federal funding sources and most sponsored research

    If you have completed the RCR training at another institution and are now conducting research at WVU, you will need to affiliate with WVU via CITI so WVU can obtain a record of your training.

    IRB members must complete the IRB Members CITI course. 

    IRB chairs must also complete the DON-Supported Extramural Performers CITI course (offered by the Department of The Navy) by following the DON-Supported Extramural Performers instructions (PDF).

    CITI Program Administrator Confidentiality Agreement

    OHRP provides direct access to CITI training records to help ensure departments can obtain training information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you would like to delegate authorization to someone in your department so they can performing training checks, please complete the CITI Program Administrator Confidentiality Agreement (DOCX) and email to irb@mail.wvu.edu. Upon review and approval, OHRP will provide access to your designee for the purposes of verifying CITI training.
